Residency in Rural Laos

Lao Sericulture Company offers residency program to artists or final year students majoring in Visual Arts/Craft to learn and share experiences on their silk farm.

The farm is situated in Xieng Khoang province, north of Lao on 42 hectares undulating land. It is used as a training centre for the villagers and silk production. The farm currently employs over 60 staff on a permanent basis.

Aim

The aim of this program is to provide an opportunity for artists to expand their technical and artistic talents, exchange ideas, share knowledge and experiences and assist the Lao Sericulture Company with product development/design and marketing.

The Program

The program involves a-hands-on approach in working on the farm. You will learn the whole process of silk production: how to plant mulberry trees, raise silkworms, reel silk cocoons, weave yarn, and the process of producing natural dyes. The program may require travelling from one village to another to learn different production process.

The program offers a 2-3 months stay, between April to November. The length of stay is flexible and can be negotiated. It is recommended a minimum stay of 45 days is required to see the whole production.

Funding

Participants are responsible for their own funding. These include airfares, visa, travel costs, health insurance, accommodation and living expenses.

Estimated Costs:
Visa cost $30US per month
The farm offers a 3 bedroom guest house and 3 daily meals at a cost of $20US per day

Training cost $15US per day

Translator cost $20US per day (estimated only 8 days are required within a month)

Travel from Vientiane to Xieng Khoang $160US/per round-trip or Bus $30US/per round-trip

Applications for 2010 Lao residency open on January 15 and close April 15, 2010.
