Locks and keys are significant in the daily lives of Lao women in that women have many obligations to their homes and families. Locks and keys symbolise this responsibility; the women have therefore incorporated them into their weaving patterns. Lao hosts often present their guests with a lock and key patterned cloth as a sign of their pleasure in receiving the guests. It is symbolic of offering the guest the keys to their home and hospitality.
